California Oversize Permits Escorts

| Length | - Over 100′ in LA city required two escort. - 120 feet to 135 feet required one or more escort. |Overhang| - more than 30’ front or rear required one or more. | Width | - More than 12′ required one or two escort (some local route might be required escort for under 12’ - More than 13' on two lane road required two escort on some routes. - More than 14' 11” on interstate and four lane required two escorts. - More than 16' and over 15’ for two lane road also need at least three CHPs escorts. | Heights | Over 18 feet - one escort with a high pole for utility clearance and route reconnaissance. CHP escorts may also be needed. If escort is required at a lesser height, it must be included on the permit or you may face a fine. Miscellaneous: Empty shipping containers may have a 5-foot rear overhang, whereas loaded containers cannot. Shipping containers cannot violate height restrictions. There is no need to remove the buckets, blades, or counterweights. Blades may be carried on the same trailer as an overweight dozer as long as the permission allows it ("blade detached and reloaded"). Tow-away permits need either a Tow-Away Unit Inspection Report or a Cal-Trans permit and inspection appointment. If the tow-away unit is unregistered, it requires a temporary CA registration, which is provided when the permit is obtained. Four-axle tractors need a CA inspection report or a permit with an inspection appointment. Single-axle jeeps and boosters must undergo a Cal-Trans inspection before being allowed to operate in California. Vehicles exceeding 8'6" broad, 80' long, or with overhangs above 10' are required to show proper signs, flags, and lights. Overweight cargo also need signals. For nighttime driving, amber marker lights must be installed on the load's front corners, visible from the front and sides, and red lights on the rear corners, visible from the back and sides. Los Angeles County mandates amber lights around the whole load at 5' intervals, with red lights at the back no higher than 5' above the ground. If the back overhang is 4 feet or more, at least two lights or a rear light bar are needed at night. A rear light bar is not required during the day unless the load obscures the turn signals and brake lights. In California, trailers longer than 48 feet are not permitted unless the distance from the kingpin to the center of the rear axle is 40 feet or less. Longer trailers are permitted only if the length of the cargo warrants their usage.
